Our agency is currently working with several local school districts to establish additional SRO positions. Can anyone tell me if MSROA or the Missouri Sheriff's Association Training Academy are planning any SRO Basic courses for 2013? If there are none then we may have to go through NASRO as the situation dictates. Any information would be appreciated.

Josh,
There are none at this time as HB152 just passed making it a requirment for SRO training to be certified by the State Of Mo. We will let everyone know when the class is going to be offered. We still have to get the certifed education plan put together.

Similar to the OP's question, does an out of state, retired LEO/SRO need to attend the MO Basic SRO course, once s/he begins with a local agency?
Or would his/her prior years of service and SRO experience qualify them for the position?
Thanks in advance,
- David

Trey, thanks for that info. Sounds like you'll have an easy 40 hour block of instruction.
Bring your pillow and pj's...

Ladies and gents, We are trying to figure out a fair way to take care of everyone. We would not expect an 11 year SRO to go through the basic course as long as they have some type of basic SRO training through NASRO or Police Chiefs or some type of quality program. The whole idea of the certified SRO is to get rid of the horror stories we hear about untrained officers doing things in our schools that are out of line or harmful to the education of students. I can not tell you how many times I hear about situations where an untrained officer put students in harms way with their actions. So recap......we will take all quality training programs into concideration. Thanks!

Trevor, as for me, I went through Jim Corbin's initial 40 hour basic SRO class in the mid 90's, while he was still in Arizona. Shortly after that, I attended a combined NASRO/ASROA (Arizona School Resource Officer's Association) hosted by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education. AZFLSE is the training arm for all Arizona SRO's, along with on-going training for attorney's and judges. Too many hours of training to count in my 13 years as an Arizona SRO. I was also a Central Arizona Regional Representative for ASROA. for most of those 13 years.
What type of documentation would the State of Missouri need to grandfather someone with these credentials, as do Trey Scott and myself, not to mention others?
Thanks for your reply and direction.

David,
Corbin will be one of the courses that WILL BE accepted. We have to figure out what paper work or even how its going to work for Senior officers to submit their training certificates and for us to sort it out. For all others........if you went to a 40 hour basic course, please relax as it will not be an issue and you will not have to redo your 40 hour basic. Please give us time for us to sort all this out. Right now, we are trying to work with the new SRO's coming in as they are the ones that need training to get started. If you are a Missouri SRO and have been working in that position for several years and can show some type of basic class attended, you will be fine!
Thanks, Trevor

Trevor,
Thanks for your response and direction. I am sure many on this site are greatly relieved in not having to attend another 40 hour Basic Course, which would take them away from their many responsibilities.
I have also attended several Advanced NASRO courses over the years.
What can I do to help MSROA better fulfill their Goals & Objectives?
