...a digital or paper copy of your school site?
Thanks to Mike, Chief Richards and I are presenting ALICE training to a varied number of schools in northwest Missouri.
During these training sessions, the question is always posed to Site Administrator's:
* Do you have a map of your school site(s)?
* If you do, are they current?
* Are the maps shared with your local law enforcement and/or fire department for emergencies?
* Are your area Law Enforcement invited to tour the school?
For the LEO's in the group:
* Do you provide a digital / paper copy of the school(s) to your Agency in which you are assigned to?
* Do the maps have the school name, address and phone number prominently located upon it? How about a directional arrow? Is there a road identified adjacent to the school on that map?
If the answer is no to any one of LEO questions, then you have failed in your duty(s) to protect the school community. By having ready access to a school map for emergency response and tactics, is a major coup when confronting and defeating any/all threats.
Most school sites have a paper map affixed to the classroom wall for emergency egress. Obtain a master copy of the map, digitize it, then transfer the map to your Agency's computer. Multiple copies can be made available for map books located in the squad vehicles (I know, old school, but whatever works, right?), or simply download the map into the vehicle MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) for ease of use.
We have the maps for schools and apartments on our car laptop desktop for ease in locating what we need. A couple clicks and we're where we need to be, then while enroute, have a plan of action ready for implementation.
If you need ALICE implementation, please contact your local ALICE provider for Active Shooter Training. Or, if you have any questions, feel free in contacting me.
Thanks and as always, be safe.
